United States Stats (General):

  • The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are about 42.7 million pre-teens and teens (aged 10- 19) in the U.S. with a general population of approximately 309 million (2010). Of this total U.S. population, 6.7% are between the ages of 10 to 14 and 7.1% are between the ages of 15 to 19. 
  • Of those aged 10-19 in the U.S in 2010, 14,4% were male and 13.2% were female.
  • Generation Y, also known as "Millennials" (those born between 1980 and 2000, or aged 18-29) comprises about 80 million, or close to 25% of the total U.S population. 
  • Of these, 
    • 61% were White
    • 14% were Black
    • 19% were Hispanic
    • 5% were Asian (As of December 2009) Source
Education:
  • As of reporting in 2010, some 1 out of every 5 millennials are college graduates. 
  • "Younger whites are about twice as likely as blacks or Hispanics to have finished college (22% vs. 10% for both blacks and Latinos). But blacks are significantly more likely than whites or Hispanics to say they want to earn a college diploma." Source

  • Today's teenagers spend:
    •     12.9 hours per week talking on a cell phone
    •     11.6 hours per week on the Internet
    •       9.8 hours per week watching television

  • 93% of teens ages 12-17 go online.
    • 93% of young adults ages 18-29 go online. 
  • As of January 2010, 75% of Millennials had created a profile on a social networking site. 
  • 1 out of every 5 had posted a video of themselves online.

Miscellaneous Information:
  • Overall, suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death for all Americans, and is the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15-24. (source)
  • Traffic crashes are the number one killer of teens, four times that of people age 30 to 69, and over one-third of teen traffic deaths are alcohol-related.  (NHTSA, 2004)
  • For all families, the poverty rate decreased from 10.2 percent in 2006to 9.8 percent in 2006. The number in poverty decreased, from 7.6 million to 7.3 million. (source)
  • In 2007, 5,764 young people ages 10 to 24 were murdered-an average of 16 each day. Of these victims, 84% were killed with firearms. 86% (4,973) of homicide victims were male and 14% (791) were female. Homicide was the 2nd leading cause of death for young people ages 10 20 24.(source).
  • Three in ten teens (30%) say online bullying is now a bigger problem than bullying in the hallways and bathrooms.  16% of students say they have been a victim of online bullying. (source)

Global Stats

For the 1.9 billion children from the developing world, there are:

Education- The number of children of primary-school age not attending school feel from approx. 115 million in 2002 to approx. 101 million in 2007. Globally, more than 88% of primary-school aged children attend school, or 66 percent in less developed countries (source).
